Oxyrrhis tentaculifera Conrad 1993 Oxyrrhis maritima van Meel 1969 Morphological Characteristics : The shape, size and colour of the algae can be changed easily at different development stages. The cell is normally elongate, with circular cones at the anterior end. Girdle is not obvious. Two flagella, covered with tiny hairs and small scales. Nucleus is big and elliptic, normally located at the anterior side. Size of Specimen : 8-24 mm (L), 6-20 mm (W) Distribution : Commonly seen in coastal, estuarine and sheltered waters. May also be found at salt marsh and high-salinity lakes. Often be found in Daya Bay, Dapeng Bay, Hong Kong and the Pearl River Estuary. Major Limiting Factors : Heterophytic and heterophagons. Diatoms, green algae and cryptophyte are their major food. Toxicity : Non-toxicity; may cause fishkill due to deoxygenation at high cell concentration. |
