Morphological Characteristics :
In comparison with P. minimum, cell is more elongated and is in heart-shape. Anterior extension is at one side which may be pointed or blunt. Plates covered with small spines.
Size of Specimen :
25-40 mm (L), 15-20 mm (W)
Distribution :
Oceanic; but may also be found in coastal waters. Recorded in British Isles (Dodge 1982), North Sea, Mediterranean and Japan. Occasionally be found in Dapeng Bay and Tolo Harbour. Caused red tides with other Prorocentrum species at Tolo Harbour in the late eighties.
Major Limiting Factors :
Mainly inorganic phosphates and inorganic nitrogen; optimal growth favoured by warm temperature (22-27°C) and low salinity (<27%o) and N:P atomic ratio of 6-13.
Toxicity :
