Cylindrical cells, often in chain-form. A stont pointed at the terminal edges of the organism. Dorsal venture is flat. Apical and slightly bend inward. Size of Specimen : 100-150 mm (L), 20-30 mm (diameter) Distribution : The diatom is able to live in a wide range of temperature. Widely distributed at North Sea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines and China. Occasionally caused blooms and discoloration in Daya Bay, Dapeng Bay, Tolo Harbour and the southern waters of Hong Kong. Major Limiting Factors : Mainly DIN; favoured by the supply of silicates and low salinity (<25%o). Toxicity : Non-toxic; harmful to marine ecosystem because of eutrophication and associated oxygen depletion. |
